Jim Metzler hosted a session with Riverbed Chief Scientist Mark Day and Certeon CTO Donato Buccella that raised the question: Is there any longer a need for physical appliances?

From my point of view here are the key points:

“The need for a dedicated physical appliance to handle WAN optimization tasks, in many cases, is a thing of the past … “

“We don’t have any use cases where we found that you absolutely need to have a physical appliance,” said Certeon CTO Donato Buccella.

“.. institutional culture …. contribute(s) to the continued need for WAN optimization appliances in a physical form.” said Riverbed Chief Scientist Mark Day

Day conceded that “the trend here is very much in favor of the value being in software.” However, he added, this fact on its own doesn’t mean that hardware is going away.

In the end, of course, the dominant model going forward will be the one that customers are most comfortable with.

Check out the new Dell tech report on @equallogic replication and @Certeon aCelera Sync WAN optimization.

This technical report describes how Dell’s EqualLogic Auto-Replication feature works with Certeon aCelera Sync virtualized WAN optimization product. This report also presents Dell lab validated performance results that will enable IT and SAN administrators to take complete advantage of the Dell EqualLogic volume replication feature in conjunction with Certeon aCelera Sync software solution.

Conclusion
Certeon’s aCelera Sync software works in conjunction with Dell EqualLogic PS Series replication to implement efficient data compression and de-duplication over WAN connections. In doing so, aCelera Sync significantly reduces replication-based WAN traffic and enables more efficient replications. With “Designed for EqualLogic” iSCSI acceleration features, aCelera Sync adds flexibility to the ways enterprises can deploy Dell EqualLogic PS Series SANs across multiple sites, while helping to deliver cost- efficient, real-time performance without adding expensive network bandwidth.

Using aCelera Sync with Dell EqualLogic storage provides the following benefits:  Reduces required bandwidth by 50% to 90%

Reduces replication times by 50% to 90%

Enables more efficient business day replications

Deploys as virtual machine software– economical and easy

“Designed for EqualLogic” iSCSI acceleration features

Runs on standard Dell server hardware

Managed by the same enterprise virtualization tools used in the enterprise  Scales by adding CPU, memory and disk VM resources

Together, EqualLogic PS Series SANs and aCelera Sync software enable organizations to deploy higher performance data protection, safeguarding critical business data.

WAN optimization lets you explore Microsoft’s recommended externalization capabilities of Remote BLOB Storage (RBS) and External BLOB Storage (EBS). Don’t miss out on significant storage and related performance benefits.

When you take advantage of Microsoft’s data externalization features, Your SharePoint administrators can move large, old and unused data from a SQL server content database to secondary, less expensive repositories, all while keeping the data accessible to end users via SharePoint. http://bit.ly/woltKX

In 2012, chief information officers aim to leverage virtualization technologies, as more than 40 percent of survey respondents claimed the services were the top IT priority for their business. The savings generated from consolidating servers will then be reinvested in other IT initiatives like cloud computing, mobility and other high-ranking concerns in 2012, IDC executives told InformationWeek.

This year, businesses will begin to focus primarily on improving productivity while driving down costs. Additionally, more than two-thirds of survey respondents believe their title as CIO is no longer chief information officer, but chief innovation officer, according to the report.

“We think that CIOs are well prepared for this moment,” said IDC senior vice president of insights and vertical markets research Meredith Whalen. “They have experience leading in this transformation and they are ready to step up.”

The survey also found that CIOs will invest more in big data analytics in order to make sense of the massive amounts of information accumulated through the year.

According to a separate report by IDC, the revenues generated from enterprises using server virtualization will exceed $19 billion by 2014. This year will likely be the beginning of a major trend of companies utilizing virtual environments.
